We believe that each funeral should be as individual as the person who has died. In your time of sorrow H.Bates will look after all the arrangements that have to be done and will professionally advise you on all aspects of the funeral for all denominations 24 hours a day.

This brochure is an extension to the specialist information our staff will discuss with you: it allows you to sit and reflect on the information you have been given and to raise any further questions you may have. It reflects our commitment to you and your family.

    Arranging the funeral

Arranging a funeral is not something any of us would want to do, together with the distress and emotional upset it leaves the bereaved completely overwhelmed and unsure of what to do next. This is the situation that we are trained to understand, we endeavour to provide the bereaved with full and fair information about all the services we can provide.

    When you should contact us

Our personal and confidential service starts from the moment you contact us at anytime day or night to the point beyond when your loved one has been finally laid to rest. We can make all the necessary arrangements at your home or at our private premises. On your initial contact we will require preliminary details, so we may arrange the removal of the deceased back to our private chapel as soon as possible. We can then make full arrangements with yourself as to how the funeral should be conducted.

In all aspects of the funeral arrangements we will point out the procedures and legal requirements. We also provide a written estimate of all costs and written details of all the arrangements we have made on your behalf. We aim to make you feel comfortable with the funeral commitment you undertake with ourselves.

      The funeral account

The funeral account is divided up in to two separate parts :- the funeral directors charges and the disbursements. The funeral directors charge is our professional fees, these include a 24 hour personal, caring service, all professional services in making the funeral arrangements, arranging documentation, conveyance of the deceased to our private chapel, hygienic treatments and attendance’s to the deceased, care of the mourners, floral tributes and donations on the day of the funeral.

The disbursements are the fees we pay on your behalf, for example, church, doctors, crematoria, interment, newspaper fees, buffet, flowers etc.

With regard to the disbursements you will be given a fully itemised estimate, as this is only an estimate there may be a slight alteration to the cost. If there are any major alterations we will advise you before confirming final arrangements.

We also provide assistance in dealing with payments from the DSS Social Fund, to help people who cannot afford to pay for the funeral. The criteria for a claim is that the person arranging the funeral are receiving any of the following benefits :-

  • Income support
  • Housing benefit
  • Family credit
  • Council tax benefit

Please check what amounts may be due from :-

The estate of the person who has died, such as monies from bank or building society accounts, insurance policies, pension scheme payments, savings etc.

      Floral tributes

Our floral tribute brochures are fully illustrated and the utmost care is taken when handling your wishes.

      Newspaper announcements

An obituary and acknowledgement will be fully discussed with the family before any publication is made

      Memorials

If an interment is required on an existing grave or new grave, a further inscription or new headstone will be fully discussed by the funeral director. We have an extensive range of headstones etc. (it may be necessary to remove a headstone from an existing grave to allow an interment to take place but we take great care in handling the removal and re- fixing).

      Probate

When a person dies somebody has to deal with their estate (the money, property and possessions left) by collecting in all the money, paying any debts and disturbing the estate to those people entitled to it.

The term probate often means the issuing of a legal document to one or more people authorising them to do this.

  1. The Probate Registry issues the document, which is called a grant of representation.
  2. There are three types of grant of representation:
  3. Probate Issued to one or more of the executors* name in the deceased’s will;

Letters of Administration (with will) Issued when there is a will, but there is no executor named, or when the executors are unable to apply, or do not wish to be involved in dealing with the estate;

Letters of Administration Issued when the deceased has not made a will, or any will be made is not valid. Throughout this booklet the term grant will be used to mean whichever type of grant of representation you may need.

* people named in the will to deal with the estate.
